Teaching Thursday – White Space, Part 1
Good Morning,
First off let me introduce myself – I’m Vicki, I’m 27 and I’m from Scotland. I live with my partner and our 18 cats. I have been scrapping for almost 5 years and I describe my style as eclectic. I am a student and I’m hoping to become a hairdresser in the future. My biggest source of inspiration for my layouts are my 7 nephews and my cats. I am extremely excited to be here on The Everyday Scrapper and I hope you will be inspired by my classes.
My first 2 classes are on the use of white space on layouts. I used to be really scared of white space and I saw it as a huge challenge – now I LOVE the use of white space and I want to be able to help other people get to that stage. So this week I am teaching how to use the left and right hand side of your page, and have white space in the centre, then next week we will be using white space in another way. This is the layout you will be creating this week:

For my class I decided to use the Bungle Jungle range from Sassafras, as it went well with my photos of my nephew Oscar:

You can use any papers for this layout, but I personally tend to use papers from the same range. You can also use either 3-4 small photos or one regular sized photo.
Usually when I scrap I use several sheets of paper, the element stickers (if the range comes with these) and one sheet of cardstock. For this I used Bungle Jungle “Bungle Dots”; “Lost for Words” and the sweet treat stickers. I also used a sheet of orange bazzill cardstock.
The first thing I did when creating this layout was cut my Lost for Words paper up, if you are using other paper you could cut using the pattern or you could rip sections off your paper:

I then inked the edges of both my background paper – I chose to use the Bungle Dots paper but again you can use a patterened paper that co-ordinates with your already cut out paper or you can even use co-ordinating cardstock. I also chose to spray a quick burst of Glimmer Mist on my layout, just to give it some extra colour – but this is optional, if you’re using cardstock you could use a small amount of paint, although some people chose to just leave their background plain. By this stage your background should look something like this:

The next part is to use your cardstock to create a 1cm border all the way around your photo(s), this helps your photos pop off the page:

The next stage is to stick your photo(s) down on the left hand side of your paper. If I am using 1 photo I will raise it up on foam pads, however if I’m using 3/4 I will always stick one down flat and then raise up the rest:

Now for the title, because I used fun and funky papers for this layout, I decided to use a long title and use several different fonts – but titles are a very personal choice, so you could choose a 1 word title or, like me, you could use a longer one. I liked the idea of using thickers for the main part of my title but you could use chipboard, diecuts or stickers to create your title:

So for me the last part of a layout is always to add embellishments, I didn’t feel that my layout need alot of embellishment so I chose to use some of the sweet treat stickers, that I went around in a black pen and some dymo to add the date:

Embellishments are also a very personal thing, but for a white space layout you don’t want embellishments that are too big, you want to keep as much of the white space as possible. Once the embellishments are on, your layout is finished:

I will be back next Thursday with White Space, Part 2. In the meantime I hope you will join in trying this out. I will be providing a RAK to 1 person who does a layout taught by me between now and 7th January 2010. The RAK will be a kit that will enable you to create a layout that I have taught here. If you do create a layout please go to the forum and show your layout in the Teaching Thursday space, and you will be put into the prize draw.
See you next week, Vicki xx
